Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is Peru’s most breathtaking natural phenomenon — a peak at 5,036 meters above sea level whose slopes are painted in vivid stripes of red, yellow, green, white, and purple by centuries of mineral deposits: iron oxide, sulfur, chlorite, and limestone. Only accessible since 2015 when climate change melted the snow cover, this is one of the world’s newest and most dramatic trekking destinations.
Your day begins before dawn with a 3:00 AM pickup from Cusco — early enough to arrive at the trailhead before the crowds and experience the mountain in its most magical morning light. The tour also includes the Red Valley — a crimson landscape at the base of the Ausangate massif that many travelers say is even more stunning than Rainbow Mountain itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the hike?
The hike is about 5km round-trip with 700m of elevation gain. The challenge is not the distance — it’s the altitude. At 4,300–5,036m, even fit and experienced hikers will feel breathless. We walk slowly and your guide manages the pace expertly throughout. Most healthy adults who have spent at least 2 nights acclimatizing in Cusco can complete it. Trekking poles (available on loan) and horses at the trailhead ($20 USD) are available for those who need extra support.
What if I can’t make it to the top?
There is no shame in stopping — and your guide will never push anyone beyond their limit. The views are spectacular at every point on the trail, not only at the summit. Horses are available at the trailhead for $20 USD for those who need assistance on the ascent. If altitude sickness symptoms appear, your guide is trained to respond and will always prioritize your safety over reaching the top.
What about altitude sickness?
The trailhead at Pampachiri sits at 4,300m — already higher than Cusco city. Altitude sickness (soroche) is a genuine risk for anyone who hasn’t acclimatized. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 nights in Cusco before attempting this hike. On the day: walk slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the night before, and listen to your body. We carry emergency oxygen. Consult your doctor about altitude medication (such as acetazolamide) before your trip if you have concerns.
Is Rainbow Mountain worth it?
Absolutely. Rainbow Mountain is one of the most visually unique landscapes on earth — the combination of seven mineral colors at high altitude, with the Ausangate massif as a backdrop, is unlike anything else in the world. Yes, it’s an early start and a physically demanding day. Most travelers who do it describe it as one of the highlights of their entire trip to Peru. Come prepared, take it slowly, and it will not disappoint.
Is the Red Valley worth the extra entrance fee?
100% yes. The Red Valley is a 20-minute detour from the Rainbow Mountain summit — a sweeping crimson landscape at the base of Ausangate that many travelers say is even more stunning than Rainbow Mountain itself. The S/30 (~$8 USD) entrance fee is paid at the gate. Don’t skip it. If you’ve made the effort to get to 5,036m, spending an extra 20 minutes to see the Red Valley is one of the best decisions you’ll make on the trip.
What is the best time of year to visit?
May to October (dry season) offers the clearest skies, most vivid colors, and best photography conditions. The rainy season (November–March) brings dramatic clouds and occasional snow — the mountain is still beautiful, but visibility is less predictable and the trail can be muddy. We run the tour year-round; contact us to discuss conditions on your specific dates.
Why such an early departure — 3:00 AM?
The drive from Cusco to the Pampachiri trailhead takes approximately 3.5 hours. Leaving at 3:00 AM means arriving at the trailhead by 7:00 AM — early enough to begin the hike before the main crowds arrive and reach the summit in the clearest morning light. Afternoon visits to Rainbow Mountain are noticeably more crowded and often cloudier. The early start is worth it.
